1. Locate a famous/well-known poem or poet. There is an adequate supply at these sites:
2. Respond to the poem in one or several of the following ways:
a) choose a single line from the poem and start your poem with that line. Freewrite and see where it leads you.
b) choose a character or image that the poet has created and respond to that character or image.
c) address the speaking voice in the poem (that of the poet itself?) and carry out a monologue (perhaps presupposing the responses of the poet along the way?) with the poet.
d) address the poet as if you have known him/her intimately based on what you know of the poet in his/her writing.
e) freewrite and invoke the name and actions of the poet.
